How to choose your treats?

Before the creation of Truffle délice, my first instinct before buying treats for my little ones was obviously to look at their composition. If I saw that the treats were made from grains or animal by-products, I moved on. I then followed training on dog nutrition and quickly realized that there were even more criteria to check.

The first thing in fact is: cereals which should be limited as much as possible! We see more and more brands that soothe by advocating grain-free, but do you really know why cereals are not recommended for our dogs? I'll explain it to you.

Dog saliva is devoid of amylase. Amylase is the enzyme involved in the breakdown of carbohydrates and carbohydrates. Amylase is secreted by the pancreas which plays a major role in digestion. Ingesting food containing large doses of cereals, and therefore carbohydrates, pushes the dog's pancreas to work at a sustained pace for long hours in order to secrete the amylase necessary for processing carbohydrates. This process slows down and weakens the entire digestive system, and exhausts the dog's body, particularly its immune system, which is also very dependent on the intestinal flora.

In addition, cereals are rich in gluten for some of them and have a glycemic index of up to 85 for wheat for example. Many of them also carry a risk of mycotoxins (molds created by certain fungi that develop on cereals).

Then, you need a maximum of animal proteins and a minimum of carbohydrates which are present in corn, corn grits, rice, dehydrated beet pulp, etc. Meat must be the most present food in the treat and the animal species must appear.

Furthermore, animal proteins must be of good quality : no animal by-products. Animal by-products are animal corpses or parts, products of animal origin or other products obtained from animals, which are not intended for human consumption. In other words, these are the remains of slaughterhouses (feathers, beaks, viscera, etc. which are crushed and sold to the pet food industries).

In addition, be wary of additives which are most of the time chemical: colorings, preservatives, texturing agents, flavor enhancers, etc.

  • BHA, BHT, E320, E321: preservatives derived from petroleum used to harden plastic materials
  • E324 or Ethoxiquine: insecticide
  • E310 or propyl gallate : car antifreeze
  • E100 up to E180 : colorings
  • E620 up to E837 and E950 up to E959 : flavor enhancers
  • E322 up to E518 : texturing agent
  • E200 up to E297: preservatives

Finally, choose a slow type of cooking at low temperature : in order to preserve all the nutritional values!

  • Traditional = high temperature + 150°
  • Intermediate = average temperature 95°
  • Cold pressed = low temperature 45°

For extra energy, go for treats with a high protein content, such as treats rich in essential fatty acids like sprats or cubes of Pisces. They will also help maintain your dog's soft and silky coat.
  • Low calorie intake: unlike industrial treats, natural treats have a much lower calorie intake.
  • Essential for the education of your furry friend: to support you in a healthy and lasting education, natural treats will be your best ally. In fact, you can use them to guide a movement or a position in which you want your dog to put itself and reward him once he has succeeded. Treats allow the dog to register what is right or wrong to do.
  • Time to relax: dogs like humans are subject to stress and sometimes, they will let off steam on your shoes, your furniture, your sofa... A good chewing workshop allows them to relax. The cartilaginous chewing treats will be perfect for your companions, they have the particularity of softening under their teeth while ensuring a rather long chewing time.
